Notes on Childhood Joys
Childhood joys from my notes:
Tents. I loved the smell of canvas, and the coziness of tents - the pup tent, the old tan three sided tent without a floor, the green cabin tent.
Bicycles. Getting around, doing stunts, going to Marysville to the bookstore, crashing like daredevils, playing. The feel of relative speed, wheels, people power.
Books. Reading - in bed, in the sun, in the travel trailer, in the old enclosed hammock. Most often, the reading in bed - secure, but with adventures to experience.
Dogs and Cats. Heidi (Norwegian Elkhound), Mimi (poodle) and a number of other dogs. Several cats, including my black cat that rode on my shoulders.
Cars. Playing in them, riding in them, reading a lot about them, imagining the future of driving them. Building plastic models of cars. Later, the driving of all kinds of cars.
Music and Radio. Listening to the radio. Listening to the Monkees and other pop/rock music. Listening to the radio late at night, in bed - sometimes to old people “easy listening” for sleep. Also, listening to afternoon radio shows while building plastic models.
Matchbox Cars. Playing with the toy vehicles, but also creating complex stories to power the use of the cars in narratives.
